My grandmother is Bessie Poepoe, she also was from the Poepoe family in Ulupalakua. Her married last name is Maldonado. I was trying to start a geneology record for my kids and was wondering if you could contact me with any info.

I am looking for information on George K Kauaulalena and where he is buried?
Aloha,
My maternal great-grandparents are George M. and Susie M. (nee Poepoe) Kauaulalena. If this is the George you are seeking I have some info that I’m willing to share. Tutu Metaka is buried with his mama (Tutu Makahala) in a cave just below Kanaio Church (aka Piiloa Hale). I hope this helps.
Are you related to Margaret Uwekoolani? She was living next door to Kanaio Church the last time I attended service there.
I hope this helps you. Please email me … mai hilahila.
Hi Jalynn
I would appreciate any info you could provide. My girls would love to meet their cousins, are they in h.s. too?
Hello, this road to my family genealogy has been difficult. Anyone who has resources please advise. My Dads mother (my grandmother) was Mabel Poe Poe ( deceased 1944). Her brother was Raleigh Poe Poe. That’s about all I have. My dad doesn’t know because he was only 6 when his mom passed. I’ve been to Keawalai Church in Makena. What kind of information might I be able to gather there?. Aloha John

Ra* could be short for Raleigh and the Poepoe F could be Mabel. Raleigh was born around 1919 or 1920
Birthdate for my grandma Mabel Poepoe of her headstone in Hilo Hawaii indicates August 17, 1912 to February 28, 1944. The digital, image and sheet number where is that located?. Aloha John
Aloha John,
Your grandmother Mabel is one of many Poepoe relatives I’ve been trying to track. Here is what I found from records of the Mormon Church:
Mabel Kahiolani Poepoe
b. 27 Aug 1912
d. 25 Feb 1944
Parents: James Kahiki Poepoe and Ellen (aka Helen) Kaiona Makaiwi
The link below contains a photo of Mabel’s headstone.

FYI, and off the top of my head, here are some of the names of your (and my) ‘ohana who are buried In the cemetery at Keawalai Church:
Mabel’s grandparents (my maternal great-great-grandparents) are John Solomon (also known as J. S.) Poepoe and Kaapuni (nee Poohina) Poepoe.
James Kahiki Poepoe (Mabel’s father) is NOT buried at Keawalai (he’s buried at Waikapu Cemetery), but some of his siblings are.
Caroline Kealohaaina (Poepoe) Palenapa
Susie Makapo (Poepoe) Kauaulalena – my great-grandmother
Tommy Poepoe
Pine Poepoe
George Poepoe
Frank Poepoe
Mabel’s brother Raleigh Kahiki Poepoe and his wife Alice are buried at Kanakaloloa Cemetery on Molokai.
At least half if not more of the burials at Keawalai (formerly known as Makena Church) are related to us directly or through marriage. Our history and connection with that church go back to the late 1800′s when John Solomon served as kahu. Considering the number of Poepoe burials at Keawalai, I’m sure many of our ‘ohana worshiped there as well.
I hope what I’ve shared so far is helpful. If you’re interested, I would be happy to share with you info that deals with your direct line (birth / marriage / death records, obits, photos, etc). Maybe together we can find more info on Mabel. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email: w84wawa@gmail.com.
